Observation details
The swan was photographed by Gary Lohnes at the end of the Green Bay Rd. Lise Bell then sent the photo to James Hirtle who posted on the NSBS Facebook page and the NS-RBA. Others searched for the bird during the next few days without any luck. Comments in an e-mail to David Bell from Kyna Intini (Ontario Trumpeter Swan Restoration): Hi David: Thank you very much for reporting Trumpeter Swan P08. This is a really exciting observation because I believe it is the first one of our tagged birds that has gone to Nova Scotia. P08 is a cygnet from 2016. Her parents are H97 & A62, they nest in a wetland in Cambridge, Ontario. P08 was tagged along with 3 of her siblings (P07, P09 & P10) at their nesting pond. There were also 2 cygnets that didn't get tagged. The family usually spends the winter in the Hamilton Harbour, at the far west end of Lake Ontario. But this year when they arrived, they had P10 and the two unbanded cygnets. P07, P08 & P09 are missing. Trumpeter swan in Ontario are a reintroduced species as they were extirpated in the late 1800’s. The restoration starting in 1982 and we have been continuously monitoring them since then. We place tags and bands on the ones we can catch (wild birds) so that we can track the population size and movements. So P08 is definitely a wild bird.
