Observation details
Was just about to leave at 8:30 when the first woodcock started calling right in front of me. Burst out of the reeds on the edge of the road a few feet from me and nearly took my head off; flew close enough for me to feel the air on my face. Landed on the road in the exact same spot as a couple of weeks ago and allowed me to approach closely. Over the course of the next ten minutes the woodcock ran closer to me, repeatedly calling, until a second bird appeared and they began their flight displays. Blindly manually focusing in the dark and shooting handheld at less than a tenth of a second, with 6400 ISO on a 17 megapixel camera body, made for some very grainy (and a lot of very blurry) pictures. Best views I’ve ever had of a woodcock though!
