Observation details
I had a brief look at the underwings as this gull came in for a landing and noted very little black visible on the underwing tips. I then watched this gull for about 10 minutes before it tucked it's bill. This bird was slightly smaller than the Herring gulls with a somewhat smaller and daintier bill than Herrings also. The bill showed a small spot on the bottom. The head crown was clearly rounded not flat like the Herrings. The heavy wash on the head and neck matched my field guide for Thayers. The photo shows the darkness of the legs compared to the Herring gull behind it. I believe this was a Thayer's gull, hopefully I noted enough fieldmarks to verify it.
