Media notes
Probable altivagans Fox Sparrow at Cal State San Bernardino, San Bernardino County, CA on 6 Jan 2017.
Observation details
Three in close proximity between West and North Badger Basins; all were calling, giving "smack"-type calls. My initial impression was that these birds had relatively sparsely spotted underparts, and grayish backs with contrasting reddish-brown wings and tails, thus not Sooty Fox Sparrows. The calls and normal bill size also eliminated Thick-billed Fox Sparrow. I thought that the wings looked more reddish than what I typically see on Slate-colored Fox Sparrows, but overall the plumage didn't seem red enough to be a Red Fox Sparrow. Upon examining the photos, I could see indistinct reddish spots (not quite streaks) on the back, so I concluded that they were likely of the intermediate subspecies P. i. altivagans.
