Media notes
Last set of NFC calls heard as the bird drifted away.
Observation details
NFC heard through open window. Ran outside to get a recording as the calls slowly faded away. Heard about 4 sets of calls in 30 seconds, each one fading as the bird presumably flew further away. Immediately struck me as a Common Gallinule NFC, which have been reported surprisingly frequently as NFCs this spring. Due to my inexperience with these calls and the odd sounds made by rails and such, I sent this recording around for input. The consensus was indeed gallinule. Rob Furrow mentioned the “muttering” quality of this vocalization that is consistent with this species. Epic yard bird!
