Observation details
Quoting Alex Marine in regards to the situation... "Please read carefully in regards to viewing this bird: The Brown Booby is in a very delicate location surrounded by private homes and one resort. There is only one area that the bird should really be viewed from. Those coordinates are as follows : 38.1723444, -92.7903329 This spot is on a public road overlooking the Bear Bottom Resort and out into the cove where the BRBO can be seen usually sitting on top of a boat dock. This spot where the lake is visible is on a sharp bend of the road. It is very important for everyone's safety that you do not get out of the car to set up a scope or camera because cars from behind and in front of you will not be able to see around the corner. While driving Castle Garden road to get to the other side of the bird may seem appealing the neighborhood there is very sensitive to unusual cars and has an active neighborhood watch. I strongly advise against taking castle garden road because the only way to view or document the bird will be to look directly in between houses which will make the homeowners uncomfortable. For the same reasons I advise against taking the road to the north. Unfortunately viewers of this rarity will likely need to settle for short-lived and distant views in order to prioritize the comfort and safety of the surrounding neighbors and businesses. The Bear Bottom Resort is a public resort with a bar and restaurant that opens most days at 11 AM. Once it opens traffic on the road where you can view the bird will increase and it is important that birders not affect the traffic flow of the business. It's a difficult chase that may not reward the best views, but it is an incredibly exciting bird. I suggest moving on as quickly as is reasonable in order to give others a chance to view the bird from the one publicly accessible spot that it's viewable. I'm sure if you choose to support the the bear bottom resort later in the day by purchasing something from the restaurant they'll have no problem with you getting a close look at the bird from their front parking lot. I've emailed them to make them aware of the situation with birders on the hill above their establishment. Please be careful, safe, and respectful. The comfort and safety of the neighborhood should be the number one priority."
