Observation details
Observed winter-plumage, adult bird distantly through scope in light rain and overcast conditions from top of dam. Distinctive field marks were the constantly upturned bill; extensive pale feathering on cheek, neck, and flank; and substantially lighter build than nearby Common Loons. After observing the bird for several minutes and ultimately coming up not quite entirely convinced it was a RTLO, I panned right and immediately found a convenient Common Loon for comparison. The contrast was unambiguous, with the RTLO notably smaller, paler, and with a relatively small bill held upright the entire 45 minutes I observed the bird. The COLOs obligingly swam behind the RTLO at one point, providing some blurry comparison shots (will attach later).
