Observation details
Found yesterday bear the Edna G tugboat by local resident Gary Leeper. Field notes: Small rather dark goose grazing on grass near the a Agate Bay boat launch. Obviously smaller than all forms of Canada geese nearby. Overall much darker as well. Black bill, and black legs and feet. Irides dark but glint reddish in the morning sun. Entire head and neck black. Upper breast also black forming a stocking-like a distribution. Belly grayish with darker gray spackling on flanks. Scapulars grayish. Upper wing coverts blackish and edged white. Folded wing tips black. Vent and undertail coverts white. Tail pattern only seen briefly when a Mallard hen was aggressive towards the goose. Wing pattern not seen because I was taking pictures the only time it opened its wings. It's been actively feeding the entire time. Broken overcast with patchy sunshine, looking SW from estimated distance of 7 m. Did not vocalize. Scratched its head once. Local resident with unleashed dog walked by as we were leaving and the Brant showed the same wariness as the rest of the geese. Seen until 0900 with JWL. JGB briefly stopped by.
