Observation details
Most of time was spent onserving and photographing these sapsuckers. Two males bidding for the same apparent territory. Lost of drumming (oftentimes on the same tree simultaneously), chasing, occasional fight to the ground, and raiding sap wells. Was interesting to watch. The forest was nearly constant with drumming of other Williamsons Sapsuckers within earshot. Also observed something I had never seen with this species….females drum too. Several times watched a female fly to the drumming tree (a dead top larch tree) and upon landing do a shortened, single sylable drum for about a second. Never saw the female low enough to photograph.
