Observation details
Tom Murray found an odd-looking Phoebe and called me. He tracked it down and was able to confirm it was a Say’s just before I arrived. A typical flycatcher shape, overall medium gray upper parts and darker gray head, pale grayish breast, yellowish orange/ochre belly, two faint thin whitish wing bars, black tail, thin black bill, black eyes, rictal bristles. It appeared slightly larger/longer than Eastern Phoebe. It behaved by alternately perching atop chainlink fence along airport road, flitting to grassy ground below (for insect prey), and then back up to another fence perch farther along. It ranged from near control tower dirt mound /observers lot all the way to the old FAA building near the airport entrance, and back again. Later it was on runway signs, fuel tank mechanisms, snow plow, and other objects. It was not seen to pump its tail as EAPH often does. Word got out to the CT birding community and soon there was a small mob enjoying this 4th state record. Airport security came out, but they were understanding, and let us stay. Photos.
