Observation details
Chilika Lake is the India’s largest brackish water lagoon. Covering parts of three districts of Odisha i.e Puri on the East, Khurda on the North and Ganjam on the South. The Nalabana island is part of the Chilika Lake. This island, a secluded portion of green, is home to large flocks of migratory birds including Greater Flamingos for years. This island is off limits for tourists the only option is to watch the birds from distance. We were staying at Manglajodi (Khura District) which is also a portion of Chilika lake. From Manglajodi we took a motorized small fishing boat to see the flamingos. By road the distance is 53KM (Source: Google map) but as we travelled by boat the distance became much lesser but took lot more time. My estimation from Google map the distance will be around 25-30KM. We started at sharp 4:30 in the morning and reached our desired location at 10:00 AM. We spend around 30 minutes took few photographs and returned. While returning we had to take few stops for our lunch etc. And finally we reached Manglajodi around 4:30 PM. The whole journey was full of birds. We saw terns, gulls, Brahminy kites, Barn swallows, egrets, ducks, herons etc in numbers also a Osprey catching fish (details in the checklist). Estimated numbers of flamingos will be around 200. I arrived to this number by counting the individuals from flock photographs taken from very long distance. I have stitched 2 such photos and added it to the checklist.
