Observation details
By itself in the marsh along the causeway. We saw lots of Garganey elsewhere today and I would say this bird was similar in size or a tad smaller, with a less square-shaped head. Bill size was hard to judge, wasn't obviously smaller than Garg, but there is some variability. Orange-ish color at base of bill support GWTE, as does fairly plain face with just a bit of an eyeline. Small size and compact shape when first sighted at a great distance looked good for GWTE. Not sure if these are consistent field marks, but on this individual the fairly plain cheeks and extra orange color at the base of the bill are both things I don't usually see on American GWTE.
