Observation details

Rare from shore; observation entirely from Spermaceti Cove boardwalk; initially distant and in poor light behind sandbar directly in front of boardwalk and then flying behind Skeleton Hill Island, then closer as it alighted on the bay in front of Skeleton Hill, and finally a flyover pass at the boardwalk; clearly a Red/Red-necked Phalarope but not identifiable to species due to distance + lighting until it landed on bay in front of Skeleton Hill Island at which point it was safely identifiable as a Red Phalarope via scope views, close flyover pass afterwards offered most detailed view plus photos; vs. Red-necked Phalarope: fairly robust appearing, overall a relatively thick and more bluntly tipped bill, back (mantle and scaps area) mostly covered with uniform gray feathering, sharp “kit” calls with a slightly rising audible quality (heard well when it flew over boardwalk); photos.
