Observation details
A large, dark-backed gull. Striking pale eye with a prominent red orbital ring. Dark smudging surrounding the eye. Light streaking on the rest of the head and neck. ‘String of pearls’ on the primaries leading to a large white trailing edge. Pink legs. The gull seemed larger than nearby westerns and also more dominant. It snapped at a couple of Western gulls who then quickly got out of its way. I was here on previous nights and did not see it despite hours of searching so I want to say this is a new roosting spot for this bird as, now that I’ve seen one in person, they are immediately impressive and stand out next to our local gulls, so I would like to think I would have spotted it on previous nights.
