Observation details
Weather: Stormy; very windy and rain ranging from very light to bucketing. Time when I spotted it: 1:40 PM, November 27 2016 Exact location I was viewing from: 49.07536, -123.02378 (field across the road from turf farms on 72nd at Boundary Bay). Viewing distance: 200-250m Notes: Large gull in field with around many hundred other gulls, mostly Glaucous-winged Gulls but the occasional California Gull, one Western Gull, the occasional Thayer's Gull and a few Ring-billed Gulls. Slightly larger than the surrounding Glaucous-winged Gulls. Very dark back- even darker than a nearby gull that looked pretty good for a pure Western Gull. It had a paleish eye- noticeably much paler than the surrounding birds, even from a distance. Feet were pink. The bill was heavy, pinkish in colour with a black band at the tip of the bill. The bird was later relocated by Ilya Povalyaev, who also photographed the bird. A number of gull experts have reviewed the photos and the unanimous consensus is a Slaty-backed Gull, likely 3rd-cycle.
