Observation details
At 8:45AM, January 28, 2022, I observed, through a window, a male yellow-headed blackbird feeding on a platform feeder containing black-oil sunflower seed. After a brief time (2min) he flew away, returning after approx. 5min to feed below the feeder on the ground. After a couple of minutes, he, again, flew off to return after approx. 5min to feed on the ground below the platform feeder. He repeated this behavior numerous times for approximately 30 minutes. Then did not return again that I observed. Interestingly, while he was feeding on the platform feeder, the nearby birds that normally use the feeder, perched on nearby trees until the yellow-headed blackbird left. They immediately descended on the feeder when the YHB exited. The male yellow-headed blackbird was observed on an open, rolling hillside with a natural stream, nearby wooded areas to the north and west and a tall grass/shrub/young tree prairie land to the south.
