Observation details
Towards the end of our visit, a group of parrots flew by giving a call that was distinctly higher-pitched than the typical call of the RCPA. I obtained a video of these birds, but the low light levels make it impossible to determine any visual ID features (no sense of size, structure, plumage), perhaps other than the fact that they are some kind of Amazona sp. The calls that they gave, however, did make it into the recording, which I've uploaded here. I don't fully understand the variation of RCPA calls, but these were consistently different, mainly being drastically higher-pitched and more up-slurred, than what I am familiar with. Red-lored and Lilac-crowned Parrot (A single Lilac-crowned was photographed along this trail for the first time last year in May) are some candidates that I've looked at. This could have big implications, through hybridization, for the validity of Hawaii's Red-crowned Parrots as a back-up population to the declining Mexico population. As for the count of birds, 8 parrots flew by in my video recordings. I can't tell how many birds were calling, but because I didn't hear any familiar RCPA calls in the recording, I've marked all 8 as Amazona sp. Update 1/18/2022: Kimball Garrett believes that the recording contains Lilac-crowned Parrot calls, though he also notes that he is not familiar with other Amazona sp. sounds. Simon Kiacz adds that Red-lored parrot matches these calls well. In any case, Amazona sp. is the best option here. Listening to Red-lored audio recordings on eBird, I personally lean towards Red-lored, as the squeakiness of the calls matches well, though without any visual on the birds, it may be impossible to know for sure. Update 2/28/2022: These same calls were heard on later dates and photos of the birds show that these Amazona sp. birds are indeed Lilac Parrots.
