Media notes
Taken with Nikon 60x optical zoom camera (P600) on a very windy day, into the sun. Reviewed by Jon Dunn.
Observation details
This bird flew out over my head from the sea grape by a beach access walkway. It went behind the sand cliff, then popped into the water, where I got this picture. After a minute it flew north farther out in the surf, landing once for a while, then continuing north over the surf. I originally put this under Wilson's because I wasn't sure and it was on the 'common' list. Later closer review of the photo and field guides led me to Red-necked Phalarope as more likely based on head and neck pattern and time of year. Subsequently I had the opportunity to review this photo with Jon Dunn who ID'd it as a Red-necked without prompting based on the bill, head/neck pattern and striped back, after being told only location and date.
