Observation details
I stopped by the lake to look for the potential Hoary Redpoll that Steve Hampton photographed the day before and was pleased to find it quickly with a flock of Common Redpolls. It was cooperative and stayed in view much of the time. It's missing several of its tail feathers which makes it easier to pick out among the other birds and be confident quickly that it's the same bird before looking more closely at it. It seems to fit the ID criteria for Hoary Redpoll pretty well, with the undertail coverts and rump being largely unmarked, and flank streaking being somewhat sparse. Views of the undertail coverts were interesting as they generaly appeared fully white or showing a single faint mark, though in other views some fine dark markings (feather shafts I think?) were visible which can been seen in some of the photos. I think this was when the feathers there were fluffed up more than they were a lot of the time.
