Media notes
I recorded a full segment of the hummingbird's call as it responded to an Anna's across the garden.
Observation details
Small, short-tailed hummingbird with classic COHU features such as purple gorget, white eyebrow, short tail, wingtips extending beyond tip of tail, etc. However, there are a couple odd features about this bird. For one, the bill was straighter than I expected. The other was its call; as it responded to an Anna's across the garden, it made a call quite similar to an ANHU display call. Admittedly I haven't heard a lot of COHU to appreciate all the sounds they can make, but for what its worth the call is very different from anything I've heard from a COHU. I may be off base here, but I'm going to suggest that we at least consider the possibility of a hybrid. Attached are some photos and my audio clip for others with more experience to consider.
