Observation details
Dull brown gull with uniformly black bill and dove-like proportions consistent with Thayer's subspecies juvenile. Poor light on cloudy day may make this gull appear darker. Feathers on the back and tertials lined with white, consistent with Iceland Gull. Size about 25% larger than Ring-billed Gulls. Smaller than Herring Gull. Primary projection about equal to bill length (this, along with uniformly dark juvenile bill, eliminates Glaucous Gull). Update: I've added my poorer photos to demonstrate structure more thoroughly. The more elegant rounded shape of the head, nicely proportioned neck, and tail with primary projections are so important in establishing this bird as an Iceland Gull and eliminating Herring Gull with its less elegant, flatter, and elongated head shape. The additional photos also allow better size comparison against the Ring-billed gulls which helps to eliminate the other gulls mentioned.
