Observation details
Very rare in county! First heard at the corner of Michigan Bar and Latrobe as it flushed from within a flock of Horned Larks. Repeatedly heard giving a rattle call, plus a chew call a few times. It was then seen feeding on the ground, where I noted a sparrow sized bird a little smaller than a Horned Lark with very long primaries, a heavily streaked back, rufous wings with white bars, a rufous nape, sandy colored auriculars bordered by black, a stout pink bill, and very little white on the outer tail feathers. A second bird was heard giving a rattle call and was briefly seen in flight about 1.5 miles farther down the road. So stoked to have found this bird!!! Photos+ audio to come.
