Observation details
Juvenile. First picked up at 10:20 at mid-distance in Golden Plover flock. Immediately struck by pale custard colour of bird compared to richer gold of Euros. Size evidently smaller with different proportions, being more slender in the shoulders and longer necked, with smaller head and relatively bigger bill. Dumpy-looking with not much attenuation of rear end. Overall plumage uniform; lacking any black belly markings (meaning a different bird to that at nearby Thorney a few days ago). Better views confirmed it as a juvenile, with soft mottling on breast and along flanks (with greyish wash to belly), pristine, intricately marked upperparts. Seen three more times in day: briefly with Hugh Wright around 11:30 before taking flight (saw underwing for first time here: noticeably grey, with dusky axillaries). Then relocated in fields towards Baston Gravel Pits at 12:45, where photos and sound recordings obtained. Latterly back in original field from 14:30-15:00 at least with Will Bowell, and Trevor and Jake Williams.
