NOTES: ROCK LEDGE. DATA SHEET MADE UP FROM NOTES ON TAPE AND REEL CARD. ORIGINAL DATA SHEET IS MISSING. ML: Subject changed from Uria lomvia to U. aalge based on the following information provided by Nathan Pieplow: Comprehensive seabird surveys have been conducted on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence every 5 years since 1935. In the 1950 survey only two Thick-billed Murres were found on the entire North Shore, compared with 11622 Common Murres, and the two Thick-billed Murres were on the St. Mary Islands, not in Baie des Loups. In the 1955 survey there were zero Thick-billed Murres, compared with 12294 Common Murres. Geographic information updated to include the proper name of the bird sanctuary, as well as estimated coordinates for the center of Blacklands Island. -Matt Medler, 14 July 2014. [This recording appears to have been made with the microphone placed on the ledge adjacent to the nests. Several birds are heard calling and fluttering, suggesting that birds are flying onto and/or off the ledge. A variety of vocalizations are heard, with the better examples of each as follows: 1) Growl (0:09-0:115, 0:15-0:18, 0:495-0:525 (BEST example)), 2) Nod (0:115-0:135 (Good), 0:305, 0:525, 1:34, 2:195-2:21 [?], 6:475, 6:49, 6:50), 3) Crow (0:215-0:235 (may be decapitated?), 0:48-0:50, 1:375-1:395 (BEST example), 2:02-2:035, 2:06-2:075, 2:25-2:27, 2:515-2:525, 4:21-4:23), 4) Laugh (2:10-2:15, 2:30-2:345 (BEST example), 2:585-3:02, 4:41-4:445, 5:51-5:54, and 6:565-6:59 (if not an atypical Crow - GOOD). Also heard are several examples of fluttering, presumably as the birds flew off (4:355-4:365, 5:57-5:59, 6:015-6:025). I suspect the first few calls in the recording (0:04-0:05) are those of Alca torda, and I am not sure what the series are at 6:56-7:04 (the former may be either a atypical Laugh by Uria lomvia or the "Ecstatic Growl" of Alca torda, but I suspect the latter two series are the "Billing Calls" of Alca torda (see BNA and Figure 21 on page 43 of Bedard, J. 1969. Etude du Service Canadien de la Faune 7:1-79). There are "cryptic" stop-starts at 0:595, 1:025, 2:45, and 6:295. Quality changed from 2 to 2, 2-3 (the BEST parts of this recording are before 3:20 and between 6:55 and 7:10, the latter possibly of Alca torda rather than Uria lomvia) - CAM - 23 March 2005]. Habitat: Rocky.
