Observation details
Two adults in alternate plumage, with pure black head, breast, and belly sharply cut off from pale vent area; pure grey underwings, and one all-grey bird, showing a slightly darker grey crown, earpatch and nape and just a few tiny flecks of dark on the breast, presumably a first-summer bird hatched last year. Flying back and forth over the channel between Ten Mile Point and Chatham Island; a couple of times they landed on rocks and kelp, and briefly dropped to the water.
