Observation details
At 1 am this morning, my best effort to ID the bird was a picture on page 151 of the "Smithsonian Handbooks: Birds of North America: Western Region" (Smithsonian Handbooks) Flexibound – April 25, 2001 by Fred J. Alsop III (Author). It has a smaller picture of a female Ruddy Duck which was the best “fit” to the photo I took at Ross Lake near New Hazelton. Interestingly, “Birds of the Bulkley and lower Kispiox Valleys: A Checklist,” has Ruddy Duck on the list. It is rare, however, to see it in the Hazelton area in the fall. I sent these photos to the listserv run by the North Central Bird BCGroup at Prince George. Two birders and myself have come to consensus that it is a Ruddy Duck.
