Remarks: Reaching Nicobar Island in search of the Nicobar Megapode was a feat in itself. A 30 hours long journey by ship from Port Blair, Andaman set the tone to my quest. From there on proceeded on a 25 - 30 kms travel by road. I had to be prepared with all food supplies for the days to come. A long arduous trek of 10 – 12 kms along with the additional weight of the camera and equipment was no mean task. The long patches of slippery slush and intermittent rain just added to my woes. Litres of sweat, thousands of mosquito bites, kilometers of walking through the never ending jungle and seacoast and only four hours of sleep daily, was my routine for days. Drinking brown coloured water was definitely going to be a health hazard, however the fact that there were no good images of this bird only made me more determined. The pain one goes through miraculously vanishes when you see a Nicobar Megapode through the viewfinder. It is one of the rarest birds of India mainly due to it being hunted. The Tsunami has drastically brought the number down too. - SD. Date added to OBI: December 26, 2016.
