Observation details
Associating with six BCCH! Small flock moving through hedgerows(!) Brownish chickadee with brown cap; black throat. Light brownish sides. Scratchy n chatty call notes distinct from BCCH. Observed for approx 5 seconds at eye height in good view before it continued N in flight. Clearly following this little band of BCCH’s wherever they go. I wasn't able to get pics of the bird, and wasn't able to get a recording of the initial scratchy "day day" calls, but did get these flock vocalizations before the bird took off and flew to the next shrub. Interestingly, the call signatures are quite different on the spectrogram, with the BOCH being fainter and more downslurred, without the hooked tip as observed in the BCCH calls. The first set of calls occur at the 0:02 mark (of the spectrogram) with the faint, paired downslurred notes visible. The hooked-tip BCCH vocalizations soon follow. The BOCH call is fainter, more sombre and a little scratchier. This brief recording was taken of the seven chickadees moving from shrub to shrub; 1 BOCH and 6 BCCH.
