Observation details
Dark juvenile bird harassing gulls over lake and beach, making passes as close as a few feet overhead at times. Large bulky jaeger with broad chest and wings, overall slightly warm tones but notably colder than typical juv PAJA. Underwing coverts barred off-white and black. Undertail and uppertail coverts barred light cinnamon and black. Central rectrices notably rounded at tip, and essentially same length as rest of rectrices. Overall plumage very fresh, with crisp tips on wing coverts. Head felt small and rounded, more like PAJA than expected. Bill also felt smaller and more delicate than expected for POJA. Flight style formidable, with heavy purposeful wingbeats and much more ponderous movement than expected for PAJA. Photographed extensively.
