American Golden-Plover, Arnold Road, Ventura County, CA - 10 Oct 2016
Observation details
Juvenile first found yesterday by Tom Benson. Associating with a large flock of Black-bellied Plovers on a sod field on the west side of the road, approximately halfway from Hueneme Road to the Agromin plant. At first it was very distant from the road, but eventually became one of the closer birds. Large plover that when compared to Black-bellied Plovers was smaller sized with a much smaller head and bill. Head and bill was also smaller than a nearby Pacific Golden-Plover in the same field. The coloration was a grayish-brown and very unlike the yellowish-golden color of the Pacific Golden-Plover. The wings were long and the included photo (ML37170141) clearly shows four primary tips extending beyond the tertials. Other fieldmarks consistent with this species included a whitish supercilium that contrasted with a darker cap, grayish belly and breast, and finely speckled upperparts.
