Observation details
Light morph juv. While watching two Barn Swallows flying over the riverbed (350 yards downstream of Hwy 1 bridge), this hawk high overhead passing south caught my attention. From the shape, I immediately suspected BWHA and snapped a few distant photos as it wheeled a couple times, then stooped toward the north and out of sight. Relatively small, compact Buteo with characteristic broad wing shape, the wing tips edged with black.
