Observation details
I find these sparrow harder to pin a name onto than many other birders. Young or worn Saltmarsh can be especially confusing and genetic studies confirm the extensive introgression of subvirgatus into caudacutus. These birds stood out by virtue of the grayer head, more diffuse streaking on the breast, less obvious white throat, more rounded head shape and shorter, less pointed bill. Fit my understanding of subvirgatus.
