Observation details
First detected by "whit" call, which I thought to be either Gray Flycatcher or Willow Flycatcher but I couldn't pin it to either one. I tracked the vocalizations down and found a small compactly-built empid with medium-short tail; rounded, pale breast; short primary projection; high-contrast black-and-white wings; bold eye ring more round than almond-shaped; and a small, broad bill mostly yellow below with dusky tip. After watching the bird for a few minutes, it bizarrely caught its wing on a palo verde branch and hung there for about a minute. It was eventually able to free itself and after preening the wing for a few seconds seemed to resume normal foraging behavior without any issues. I don't expect the bird to hang around the location long given the suboptimal habitat of a dry, open wash. If you go, remember that a permit is required to access this area, and is available online here: https://luke.isportsman.net The precise location was about 1.0 km southeast of Raven Butte, moving up and down the wash between 32.39343,-114.09482 and 32.391075,-114.09829. Four-wheel drive is necessary to reach the nearest road, at Raven Butte, and one would have to walk 1 km from there. Willow Flycatcher and Western Flycatcher (not seen during this list, but after) were both present to add to the identification challenge, and to provide comparisons. State review list species, and only nine previous records from the state accepted in eBird. Accepted by the Arizona Bird Committee.
