Media notes
The quality of this photo is judged good because of the additional important evidence this provides of the bird's being a Ruff. One should understand in studying this photo that the wing extending far above the bird is its left wing as may be understood when one notes that it is fully exposing its belly in the photo. (a) The heavy, dark (black in this particular case) feathering on the front of the bird that extends right back on the underside onto the anterior part of the belly is another feature that is typical of many breeding-plumaged male Ruffs. (b) This photo, like ML36807841, shows a very bulky bird, right through the middle of the bird, very appropriate for the species and, especially, in a breeding-plumaged male. (c) The basically white underwing is characteristic of the species. (d) Here one can see very clearly that the feet extend back behind the tail in the flying bird, and this is important (in combination with other features) in judging that a bird is a Ruff.
Observation details
Commentary on each of these photos will provide the rationale for considering that particular details in the photo, especially taken together, are compatible with a breeding plumaged male Ruff.
