Observation details
I'm changing my observation from Western/Clarks based on the white that goes goes around the eye and also the reddish coloration at the base of the lower mandible. From what I have read this is a breeding characteristic but can occur in birds into September. I'm also adding a second photo in which this bird is to the right of a Western Grebe. The Clark's Grebe is showing lighter coloration on its body, and while the bill is only slightly brighter than the Western Grebe, it was somewhat overcast and hazy at the time the photos were taken.
