Observation details
Confirmed by Tony Leukering. Full report to be submitted to the CBRC. Single bird foraging along a line of greenish foam (?) on a stretch of mudflats in the S/SE section of the reservoir, about 50yds from the dam. It was foraging alone, but was near a loose flock of BASP and RBGU. Picked out from the numerous BASA by larger, more delicate look from afar. We then viewed it through the scope and camera for about 15 minutes from close range (approximately 50ft) before going back to the parking lot to inform others about it. After coming back across the dam we saw a Peregrine Falcon swoop down and flush near all of the birds along the south shoreline. After several failed attempts it nabbed a shorebird in midair(possibly the BBSA). We could not relocate it. This was a beautiful, medium sized, dove/pigeon headed shorebird that appeared slightly larger and more slender than nearby BASP. Had a buff-colored wash on it’s entire body, except the vent(which was white). Fine dark streaking on crown, short, thin bill. Unmarked, buff underparts instead of the streaked/spotted underparts of other similar shorebirds. Pale, buff face and neck. Distinctive yellow legs, sometimes partially covered with mud or in a shadow. Buffy all over. Not calling. Many photos
