Observation details
***Mega(?). At least very rare. Westernmost documented record in the Atlantic Ocean, ~17 miles inside Mass state waters (by closest point of land). Small shearwater, with extensive white underwings, white undertail coverts, relatively short tail (compared to AUSH), small head and bill, and dark eye mostly or fully isolated within extensively pale face. Cold-toned upperparts, with somewhat paler gray flight feathers (assessed from out of focus flight photos, not in life). Northbound at 200-300 meters, was initially side-on, briefly, then peeled off and flew dead away to the NNE/NE, at which point nothing particularly helpful could be discerned about it. Coordinates: 39.9281000, -70.6088817. SST 28 C (82.4 F), water depth ~400 meters (it was 530 m fifteen minutes prior and and 330 m fifteen minutes after, and we were heading due north). Photos.
