Observation details
Bertin d'Eon and I checked the southern half of Hawk Channel and Hawk Inlet at Cape Sable this morning for staging Roseate Terns. The fog was thick most of the time with some brief moments of good visibility. Adult Roseates were going back and forth (east and west) through Hawk Inlet. A group of at least 7 adults and one lone adult were seen going east without fish. One adult was seen headed west carrying a fish. The fog was thick while we were at Hawk Inlet, so we could certainly have missed some birds. A total of 20 adults and 11 hatch-years were on the stone/gravel/sand beach (43.400916, -65.631300) near the Common and Arctic Tern colony (https://ebird.org/checklist/S90121825), exactly where the Roseates were roosting on August 2, 2020 (https://ebird.org/canada/checklist/S72045690). I counted the Roseates several times by binoculars and always ended up with 11 hatch-years. The number of adults fluctuated, likely as they were going back and forth to catch fish, but 20 was my maximum count. The adults with fish always came back to the roost site from the east (from Hawk Inlet). There was one adult that was diving for fish near the wharf at the end of Fish Plant Rd (43.411500, -65.627570). Adult T83, black on yellow, right leg 1332-72783 Banded as a chick on Eastern Egg Rock, Maine, on June 27, 2016. Seen on North Brother in 2019 and 2020. Paired with L76 on North Brother in 2021. Adult L96, white on red, left leg 9822-52917 Banded on NBI as ASY on June 15, 2017, seen at Peases in 2018. Adult Z04, white on red, right leg 1392-31573 Banded as a HY on NBI on Jul 16, 2019 HY Z43, white on red, right leg 1392-31656 Banded as a HY on NBI June 24, 2021 HY Z51, white on red, right leg 1392-31662 Banded as a HY on NBI on June 24, 2021 HY Z62, white on red, right leg 1392-31672 Banded as a HY on NBI on Jul 13, 2021 HY Z45, white on red, right leg 1392-31657 Banded as a HY on NBI on June 24, 2021 On August 2, 2017 (https://ebird.org/canada/checklist/S38442973) there were 8 ROST (including at least 1 HY) at Cape Sable. On August 2, 2020 (https://ebird.org/canada/checklist/S72045690) there were 20 ROST (including at least 5 HYs) at Cape Sable. I intend on checking Cape Sable again in early August to see if the ROST are still present.
