Observation details
Continuing bird and bizarre July sighting on Lempster Pond. First reported to Pam Hunt by Carol Andrews who photographed it on or about July 6. Bird was rather tame and did not seem to be afraid of kayaks. It seemed VERY AFRAID of loons. When a Loon came by, it dove and would disappear and come up far away, within a foot or two of the shoreline. Then when the loon disappeared, it would swim back out to where we were in our kayak and resume foraging with frequent dives. Once seen pulling up food. Possibly a crayfish. Our presence did not appear to disrupt its feeding behavior.
