Observation details
Single seen in flight over cattails before 'crash landing' into vegetation. Not seen thereafter. Tiny heron, much smaller than Green Herons present. Extremely rufous on upperwing with longish yellow bill and yellow legs/feet being other stand out features. Rapid wing beats in flight combined with rufous appearance recalled American Woodcock to some degree. Did not attempt a photo, the bird was simply too fast. Attached sketch attempts to convey the key features, the amount of rufous in the plumage I think pointing towards a female.
