Adult non-breeding (left) with two juveniles (right). Most noticeably, notice the advanced progression of molt into non-breeding (basic) plumage of the adult and how well it contrasts with the bird's worn brownish tertials with indistinct pale abraded edges. For a nice comparison check out the black tertials of the juvenile bird and note the freshness of the white edges on these and other retained juvenile feathers.
Observation details
6 individuals found from boat in the bay to the east and slightly south of Rock Canyon Marina. We were able to slowly drift in towards to flock to within +/- 10 ft. Five of the birds were juveniles beginning to enter their first basic (winter) plumage. Note the...
