Observation details
Regular fall migrant but scarcely detected on coastal sand flats and my first for this location. Beautiful, crisp juvenile awkwardly chasing around flies as if first learning how to hunt this coastal habitat. Seemed fairly tolerant of the nearby human/boat disturbance sometimes closely approaching a group of noisy beachgoers. Overall buffy, slender and small-headed shorebird with crisp, neatly arranged juvenile feathering. Plain face with dark eye and short, slender bill. Yellow legs. Foraging behavior distinctive as it delicately picked along the surface, occasionally high-stepping, sprinting around and snapping at low flying aerial insects. Photo attached.
