Observation details
Note: Down canyon below my territory for the count. This bird was perched in an Arizona cypress above the streambed about eye level from the road about halfway the junction with the paved Cave Creek Road and the road end parking area as I was driving in at about 5:20 a.m. It was a compact, all black hawk with bare yellow lores. Barring on wings suggested a first spring bird. Its posture almost precluded seeing any white on its short tail.
