Media notes
Playback used prior to birding/atlasing effort during marsh bird survey. Vocalizations faint so loud speakers or headphones are recommended. Clearest vocalizations at 00:06 and 00:13.
Observation details
First heard vocalizing during marsh bird survey (Adopt-a-Marsh) as part of Maine Bird Atlas. Steady, low “coo-coo-coo-coo, coo-coo-coo-coo...” heard from cattails across the open water. Continued vocalizing through the during of atlasing effort until the arrival of heavy machinery nearby. Very briefly seen in flight (neck tucked) moving low over the water between two patches of cattails. Exceedingly small heron with dark crown, back, and pale streak on over the shoulder. Although it continued to vocalize for duration, it remained well hidden within dense vegetation and was not seen again.
