Observation details
Rare! While looking for Willie’s Long-billed Dowitcher, I spotted this Ruff by recognizing the bright orange legs as it climbed up and over several stumps in the mudflat. The larger body size in comparison to nearby Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs stood out while the head seemed almost too small for the body. This juvenile was a reddish female type with beautiful scallop wing markings composed of dark centers with orange edges. The head was a buffy color and the whiter neck and breast had some rufous feathering. The black bill was short and slightly droopy. Fortunately the bird stayed long enough that many got a look this afternoon. I’ll add a digiscoped photo.
