Observation details
On the sand near the Salmon River mouth. Similar in appearance to a Caspian Tern but smaller with a thinner black bill with a yellow tip. Black legs. Black top of head reaching bill with a ragged crest at the rear. Pale gray back and upper wings with darker gray towards the tips. White forked tail. Larger than Arctic Tern. Got a few photos before it flew away. Saw it again with Steve Hemenway resting with mixed gulls and terns across the river on Central Beach. I walked out there in the late afternoon and eventually saw it again and got a few more photos. First record for the state!
