Observation details
A hint of brown in the secondary coverts and tertials suggests the upper bird in ML332481211 is a third year bird in third basic plumage (a plumage not always distinguishable from definitive basic). Two white occipital plumes seen. The other appears to be either a second-year bird in second basic plumage or a third year bird still in pre-basic moult. Compared to third/definitive basic, and consistent with second basic plumage, the latter bird was drabber overall with dusky brown-grey upperparts and wing coverts. The upperparts, in particular, were noticeably different than the dark grey of the other bird. The lower forehead was washed brownish, especially centrally. The eye was more orange-red than the red of an adult. At least four white occipital plumes. In contrast to the expected streaking on the breast of a bird in second basic plumage however, the breast was pale and unstreaked and not obviously distinguishable from the upper bird, perhaps slightly duskier on the belly.
