Observation details
Spoiler Alert! The bird flew off after seeming very content to stay. It was on the south side of I-80 very near the summit, there is a parking area at the Donner Summit State SnoPark. To get to this trail head, get off the I-80 at Boreal and drive on the south side going east for about 1/2 mile or more to the parking area. Walk down the Pacific Crest Trail for about 0.9 miles passing a big pond on the right to a small pond also on the right but farther on. There are two splits in the trail. Always keep to the right. Continue walking along the big pond and check in case the sandpiper shows up there. Continue on the trail past an area with alders but no water until you finally reach the small pond. The bird was hard to see but cooperated for some photos. Many people and dogs were on the trail and one dog jumped into the pond as I was photographing the Solitary Sandpiper. After photographing it, the sandpiper abruptly flew away. It was heading south. The GPS coordinates for the small pond are 39.33775, -120.33225.
