Observation details
Adult foraging with Western Sandpipers along the shoreline. First noticed due to larger, longer size with longer legs and more drooped-over foraging style. Closer inspection confirmed reddish base to otherwise black bill, and reddish color to black legs. White rump obvious when in flight. Molting out of breeding plumage, but mostly black and gray with slight rufous in upperparts and streaking along flanks. It's right eye was missing, and the eye socket was shriveled shut. Rare for Idaho; only the 7th sighting according to the IBRC website (and 4th sighting on eBird). Previous sightings have mostly been during spring migration.
