Observation details
Smaller and more rounded head. Wing appears to be farther forward and are slimmer looking. Wings look longer. Thicker looking neck. Appeared to have translucent primaries. More rounded head then a common. Smaller looking bill then a common or forsters. The first cycle bird had a fairly extensive hood, more then you would expect from a common tern. Looking at past reports of arte in the Gulf of Mexico, we found all reports were between May - Sept, with July accounting for 3 of the 10 reports. So it seems to fit in with the timing from the few other reports from the gulf. Finally, we sent the photos to a well known professional birder as well as a well respected offshore birding author and they both feel that arte is the best fit.
